Frequently asked questions.
What can AI for law firms handle on the phone?
A Retell AI voice agent answers your firm's line and works out whether the caller is a new client or an existing one. New callers go through intake: the agent asks your screening questions, confirms names and contact details, and books a consultation with an attorney. Existing clients get answers to routine questions such as office hours, invoice dates and client portal steps, and anything specific to a matter goes to the right person. It runs 24/7, so after-hours and overflow calls get the same handling as calls during the day, and every call is transcribed with its details saved as structured fields. It can sit in front of your current phone menu as an IVR replacement for law firms, or act as your law firm virtual receptionist.
How does AI legal intake avoid giving legal advice?
Two layers. First, the agent's instructions limit it to intake: it collects facts, explains the next step and books the consultation, and it tells the caller that an attorney will review the matter. Second, Retell's guardrails check each response before it is spoken for regulated professional advice, which covers legal, medical and financial advice, and replace a flagged response with a safe message. An input guardrail also catches attempts to jailbreak or manipulate the agent. You can test both against your own call scenarios in simulation before the agent takes a live call. The Legal Intake Screener template is a starting point.
Is Retell secure enough for confidential client calls?
Retell is SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 certified, and GDPR compliant with a Data Processing Addendum you can self-sign. Each agent has its own data storage setting: everything, everything except PII, or basic attributes only, which keeps no transcripts or recordings. You set a retention period per agent, from 1 day up to 2 years, after which call data is permanently deleted, and access to call recordings can be restricted with signed URLs. If your firm handles protected health information and needs a BAA, Retell is HIPAA compliant and the BAA can be self-signed before any PHI goes through the agent. The Enterprise plan adds custom MSA and DPA terms, role-based access control and custom SSO.
Does it connect to our legal intake software and case management system?
Retell has native integrations with Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Zoho CRM, with Calendly and Cal.com for booking and Zendesk for tickets. There is no prebuilt connector for legal practice management or intake software. Those systems connect through a custom function, which lets the agent call your system's API during the call to look up a client or create a lead, and through webhooks that send each finished call, its transcript and its extracted fields to your server. Your phone setup stays in place: calls reach the agent over SIP from Twilio, Telnyx, Vonage, Five9 or Amazon Connect, or on numbers you buy in Retell.
How much does an AI voice agent for a law firm cost?
Retell bills per minute of call time: $0.07 to $0.31 per minute on pay as you go, depending on the model and voice you choose. New accounts start with $10 in free credits and 20 concurrent calls included, with more concurrency available on demand. Firms running intake across several offices or at high call volume can move to the Enterprise plan, which has custom pricing, higher concurrent call limits, and custom MSA and DPA terms. Testing an agent is billed at the same rates as live calls. See the full breakdown on the pricing page.
Can the agent cover after-hours and overflow intake calls?
Yes. Point all calls at the agent, or set your phone system to forward only after-hours calls or the calls your intake team does not answer. After hours the agent runs the same intake as during the day and books the consultation on a connected calendar, so the lead is not left waiting for a callback. When someone is available, it can warm transfer the caller and brief the person who answers before connecting them. It also speaks other languages, including Spanish and Portuguese, so a caller does not have to wait for a bilingual staff member. It covers the same calls as a legal answering service, and completes the intake instead of taking a message. For English and Spanish callers, start from the Multilingual Law Firm Receptionist template.
