The best Intercom alternative depends on where your support volume lives: helpdesks like Zendesk, Freshdesk and Gorgias suit teams that mostly need ticketing, enterprise AI agent vendors like Decagon, Sierra and Ada suit teams buying one AI agent for every channel, and a voice agent platform like Retell AI suits teams whose biggest open problem is the phone line.

Intercom is a strong product. Fin, its AI agent, answers across chat, email and other messaging channels, and the Intercom helpdesk is built around it. Most teams that look for an alternative are not unhappy with the chat experience. They are trying to solve something Intercom does not solve well for them yet, and for a lot of support teams that something is phone calls.

This guide compares seven options using each vendor's own pricing and product pages, checked on October 19, 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a price, we say so instead of guessing.

Why do support teams look for an Intercom alternative?

The usual reasons are pricing structure, phone coverage and fit with an existing contact center stack, not chat quality.

  • Two meters on one bill. Intercom charges per seat for the helpdesk plus usage for Fin. Fin is $0.99 per outcome, and when Fin runs on another helpdesk there is a 50-outcome monthly minimum. That is easy to understand, but your bill moves with both headcount and resolution volume.
  • Phone is a separate conversation. Intercom lists phone as usage-based pricing that "varies," and Fin Voice is sold on a custom plan (more on that below).
  • An existing telephony stack. Teams already running Five9, Genesys or Amazon Connect often want the AI agent to plug into the call path they already have, rather than move phone support into a messaging platform.
  • A different helpdesk preference. Some teams want deeper ticketing, per-ticket pricing or an ecommerce-specific inbox.

If none of these apply and your volume is mostly chat and email, staying on Intercom is a reasonable outcome of this exercise.

Does Intercom Fin handle phone calls?

Yes. Intercom sells Fin Voice, and its product page now describes Fin Voice 2, which takes actions over the phone such as verifying identity, processing refunds and booking appointments, with knowledge base answers, call summaries and transfers to your team.

The catch is availability and price. Intercom's own pricing FAQ says Fin Voice "is offered on a custom pricing plan. It's currently available to select customers working directly with our sales team." So if phone matters to you, the questions for Intercom are whether you qualify, what the custom price is, and how Fin Voice connects to your carrier or contact center platform. Ask those before you assume you need to switch.

How do the main Intercom alternatives compare?

Here is the short version, based only on each vendor's own site.

Which Intercom alternative fits which team?

Each option below includes what it is good for and what to check before you sign.

Zendesk

Zendesk is the closest like-for-like swap if you want a full helpdesk with ticketing, messaging, help center and voice in one suite. Its pricing page lists Suite Team at $55 and Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month paid yearly. AI agents are included in every Suite plan and billed per automated resolution: the page shows 5 included resolutions per agent per month on Suite Team, then $1.50 per resolution committed or $2.00 pay as you go.

For phone, Zendesk lists "AI agents for voice" with the note "Requires Zendesk voice." Check: whether your phone numbers and routing would move into Zendesk voice, or stay with your current carrier.

Retell also has a native Zendesk integration, so a Retell voice agent can identify the caller, read their open tickets and create or update tickets during the call. See the Zendesk integration.

Freshdesk

Freshdesk suits teams that want a capable helpdesk at a lower seat price. Its pricing page lists Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent per month billed annually. Each plan includes Freddy AI Agent with the first 500 sessions, and additional sessions are $49 per 100.

Phone runs through Freshcaller, Freshworks' cloud phone system, which lists Growth at $15 per agent per month plus per-minute charges, billed annually, with speech-enabled IVR on its Enterprise plan. Check: the Freshdesk pricing page lists an Email AI Agent but does not describe an AI agent answering calls, so ask Freshworks directly what covers voice.

Gorgias

Gorgias is built for ecommerce, especially Shopify brands. Its pricing is "never priced per agent": plans scale by ticket volume from 50 to 5,000 tickets a month, and AI Agent is billed per automated interaction, from $1.00 on Starter to $0.85 on Advanced. Voice and SMS are add-ons priced by volume.

The Gorgias Voice page describes phone support for your team inside the helpdesk, with IVR, routing, transfers, recordings and AI summaries. Check: whether AI Agent can answer calls on its own for your plan, since the Voice page focuses on human agents.

Decagon

Decagon sells AI agents to enterprises across chat, email and voice, and says it "unifies chat, voice, and email within a single intelligence layer." Its voice product page lists support for 70+ languages, call transfers to human agents with a summary, and outbound calling. Workflows are written as Agent Operating Procedures (AOPs) in natural language.

Decagon does not publish a pricing page, so plan on a sales process. For a direct comparison on voice, see Retell vs Decagon.

Sierra

Sierra builds AI agents for large brands and says you can "deploy a single agent across chat, SMS, WhatsApp, email, voice, and ChatGPT." Its voice page covers inbound and outbound calls, over 55 languages, voice simulations for testing, escalation to human teams with context, and card and ACH payments over the phone.

Sierra describes its pricing as outcome-based but does not publish rates. See Retell vs Sierra for how the two differ on the phone.

Ada

Ada offers AI agents for voice, messaging and email, sold to enterprise support teams. If phone support is the reason you're evaluating it, ask which telephony and contact center platforms Ada Voice connects to, which languages it supports on calls, and whether it places outbound calls.

Ada does not publish pricing on its site. If Ada is on your list, our Ada CX alternatives guide covers more options in the same category.

Retell AI

Retell AI is a voice agent platform: you build AI agents that answer and place phone calls, and chat agents for website chat and SMS that use the same prompt types, functions and knowledge bases. It is not a helpdesk, so it does not replace Intercom's inbox or help center. It fits when phone is the channel you need to automate.

What the documentation covers for support teams:

  • Your existing telephony. Connect over elastic SIP trunking with any provider that supports it, use a pre-built SIP trunk with Five9, connect Genesys Cloud over a SIP trunk, or work with Retell support on an Amazon Connect pattern. You can also buy numbers in Retell.
  • Handoff to people. Cold transfer, warm transfer (the agent can leave a private message for the person picking up), and agentic warm transfer, where a transfer agent talks to the destination first and then bridges or cancels.
  • Answers from your content. Knowledge bases built from website URLs, documents and text, plus synced Google Drive, OneDrive and Notion content.
  • Actions in your systems. Native tools for Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Zoho CRM and GoHighLevel, plus custom functions that call your own API.
  • Testing and quality. Simulation tests you can run in batches before launch, and AI QA that scores sampled live calls for hallucinations, knowledge base accuracy, sentiment and tool usage.

Pricing is published: $0.07 to $0.31 per minute for voice agents and from $0.002 per message for chat agents on pay as you go, with $10 in free credits and 20 concurrent calls included. Enterprise pricing is custom. See Retell pricing.

How do the pricing models compare?

The units differ so much that a per-unit price alone tells you little. Compare on your own volumes.

Pricing unitWho uses itWhat to model
Per outcome or resolutionIntercom Fin, Zendesk AI agents, SierraHow each vendor defines an outcome, and what a transferred call counts as
Per AI session or interactionFreshdesk, GorgiasWhether a long or multi-part conversation counts once or several times
Per agent seatIntercom, Zendesk, FreshdeskHow many seats remain once the AI handles the routine volume
Per ticket tierGorgiasPeak months, since overage applies above the tier
Per minuteRetell AIAverage handle time on the calls you plan to automate
Custom contractDecagon, Ada, Fin Voice, enterprise tiersMinimums, term length and what counts as billable

Definitions matter. Intercom, for example, counts an outcome when "no further help is requested after Fin's last answer," and also when Fin completes a Procedure that hands off to a human. Qualifications are billed at $9.99 rather than $0.99. Ask every vendor for the exact definition in writing, then run last quarter's volume through each model.

For phone, per-minute pricing is the easiest to forecast because your phone system already reports minutes. Multiply the minutes of the call types you plan to automate by the per-minute rate, and add telephony if you use Retell numbers. Retell does not charge for SIP trunking or custom telephony.

Should you replace Intercom or add a voice agent next to it?

If chat and email work well on Intercom and the phone is the gap, adding a voice agent is usually less disruptive than a full migration.

Keep Intercom and add Retell for phone when:

  • Your agents, macros and help center already live in Intercom.
  • Phone volume is large enough to staff, but Fin Voice is not available to you or does not fit your telephony.
  • You want the phone agent connected to your existing carrier or contact center.

Retell connects to Intercom through Zapier: for example, a completed Retell call can post its summary to the matching Intercom conversation so phone and chat history sit together. See the Intercom integration. For anything more specific, Retell webhooks can send call events and post-call analysis to your own endpoint, and custom functions can call your API during the call, so your service can create or update Intercom records.

Move off Intercom entirely when:

  • You need a different helpdesk model, such as Zendesk's suite or Gorgias's per-ticket pricing.
  • You want one enterprise vendor for every channel and are ready for a longer sales and deployment cycle with Decagon, Sierra or Ada.

Both routes can include Retell on the phone. If you move to Zendesk, Retell's native integration reads and writes tickets during the call.

What should you test before you switch?

Run each finalist through the same checklist with your own calls, not a demo script.

  • Your call types. Pick your five most common phone reasons and test each one end to end.
  • Transfers. Confirm a human receives context before speaking, and test what happens when nobody answers.
  • Telephony. Confirm the agent works with your carrier or contact center platform, including your existing numbers.
  • Actions. Look up a real order or account, update a record, and file a ticket during the call.
  • Knowledge accuracy. Ask questions your help center answers and two it does not, and check the agent does not invent the second pair.
  • Testing tools. Check you can rerun saved test scenarios after every prompt change.
  • Peak load. Confirm the concurrent call limit covers your busiest hour.
  • Billing definitions. Get the outcome, session or minute definition in writing.
  • Compliance. Confirm data retention, PII handling and any HIPAA or contract terms you need.

Where Retell fits

If your Intercom review keeps coming back to the phone line, start there. Retell AI gives support teams voice agents that connect to the telephony you already run, transfer to people with context, answer from your knowledge base and update your helpdesk or CRM during the call, on published per-minute pricing. You can keep Intercom for chat and email, or pair Retell with whichever helpdesk you choose.
