What a forward deployed engineer does, how the FDE role differs from a software engineer, and why voice AI programs also need an in-house owner.
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who embeds with a company's customers to build, deploy and adapt its product inside their systems, then brings what they learn back to the product team. FDEs write production code, but they work on one customer's problem at a time, alongside that customer's people.
Palantir, which calls the role forward deployed software engineer (FDSE), says in its job postings that it "pioneered this unique position, embedding talented engineers directly with our customers." AI companies now hire for it under the FDE title. OpenAI's FDEs "lead complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside our most strategic customers." Anthropic's embed "directly with our most strategic customers to drive transformational AI adoption." Retell AI hires forward deployed engineers to deliver its voice AI to enterprise clients.
Their job postings describe the same core work:
On an AI voice agent rollout, the FDE learns the business, sets up the first agents, writes the prompts and connects the agents to the customer's systems.
An FDE is a software engineer whose work is organized around one customer instead of one part of the product. A product software engineer builds features that many customers use, in a team that, per Palantir's software engineer posting, "focuses on a specific aspect of a product." An FDE builds a specific customer's deployment on top of that product, from inside the customer's organization.
| Software engineer | Forward deployed engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Builds | Product features many customers use | One customer's deployment on the product |
| Works with | A product team that owns one area of the product | Customer engineers, domain teams and executives |
| Success looks like | Reliable, performant, scalable systems | Production adoption and measurable impact on the customer's workflow |
| Skill emphasis | System architecture and performance | Code plus scoping, and communicating with non-technical stakeholders |
The two roles overlap. Anthropic's posting accepts candidates who worked "as a Software Engineer with consulting experience."
An FDE works for the vendor and leads the launch. A CX automation engineer, also called an internal deployed engineer, is the customer's own employee who owns the agents after launch. Retell's post on what a CX automation engineer does describes the split: the customer's employees have the customer knowledge and FDEs turn it into working agents, but keeping that arrangement indefinitely "leaves organizations dependent on outside experts for significant changes."
| Forward deployed engineer | CX automation engineer (internal deployed engineer) | |
|---|---|---|
| Employed by | The vendor | The customer organization |
| Brings | Platform expertise | Knowledge of the business, its callers and its policies |
| Main work | First agents, integrations, training the customer's team | Prompts, knowledge base, test cases, call quality review, alerts |
| When | Launch and the most pressing problems | Every day after launch |
| A fix ships | When it reaches the top of the vendor's queue | When the team has tested and published it |

The in-house owner runs that loop with documented tools. On Retell, AI QA evaluates a sample of calls and flags problems such as hallucinations, simulation testing runs a fix against an AI caller before it reaches production, and agent versions let the team move the production tag back to the previous version if a fix fails.
FDE stands for forward deployed engineer. Palantir uses FDSE, for forward deployed software engineer, for the same role.
Yes. An FDE writes production code, but works embedded with one customer on that customer's deployment instead of on a product team that builds for every customer.
Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic and Retell AI all list forward deployed engineer roles on their careers pages as of October 2026. Palantir says it pioneered the position.
An internal deployed engineer, also called a CX automation engineer, is a customer's own employee who builds, tests and improves its AI agents after launch, so changes do not wait on the vendor's forward deployed engineers.
Yes. Retell AI's forward deployed engineers help customers get started, build the first agents alongside the customer's team and train its people. The platform then lets that team take on more of the work over time.
Retell AI is an AI voice agent platform for contact centers. Its forward deployed engineers help your team build its first agents, and the platform, including AI quality assurance, lets that team take over the improvement work at its own pace. Talk to the Retell team about your rollout and who will run it.
